International Symposium for Space Life Science and Space BiotechnologyOn September 24th, 2013, International Symposium for Space Life Science and Space Biotechnology (ISSLSB) co-hosted by CSU-CAS and school of life sciences of Northwest Poly-technical University were held in Beijing. 66 experts from ten countries joined symposium including USA, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy, the UK, Sweden and China. Among these experts, there are three members of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and 11 academician of International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). Prof. Gu Yidong, member of CAS, Gao Ming, director of CSU and Shang Peng, head of school of life sciences, Northwest Poly-technical University co-presided this symposium. Prof. Gu Yidong, from CSU, Prof. John B. Charles, Chief of International Science Office, NASA Human Research Program and Prof. Rupert Gerzer, director of DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine respectively delivered plenary presentations. Invited experts such as Laurence Young, Professor of MIT and chief scientist of Project Apollo, Patrik Sundblad, researcher at the Swedish Aerospace Physiology Center (SAPC), researcher Oleg I. Orlov, vice-director of Institute of Biomedicine, Russian Academy of Sciences and Long Mian, professor of National Microgravity Laboratory and Center for Biomechanics and Bioengineering, Institute of Mechanics, CAS respectively delivered reports of Countermeasure for a Mars Exploration Mission, Future Relations between Manned Space Exploration and Citizens’ Livelihood, Russia’s Achievements and Future Development of Space Life Sciences. Participants conducted discussions on space life science and space biotechnology (including radiobiology), latest progress, development trends and international cooperation on space life science research and research plan on Chinese space life science and space biotechnology. All participants candidly exchanged their views with each other. Gao Ming concluded the meeting. In the closing remarks, Gao expressed thanks for all participants and speakers’ spectacular reports, meanwhile, Gao also said China’s manned space science and application areas highly value international cooperation. In recent years, we have conducted international cooperation programs in various forms, we will embrace international cooperation in broader areas and at higher level.
