Address from the directorThe Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization (CSU) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in 2011. Before 2011, CSU was known as the General Establishment of Space Science and Application (GESSA); however, the name of GESSA is still in use. As a national strategic team for S&T development, CAS is the backbone for China’s aerospace. In September 1992, Chinese government made a decision to implement the manned space program and GESSA was established. When GESSA was first established in 1993, there were only 10 members and now there are more than 400 people working in CSU. A research team consisting of scientists, engineers and research managers has been developed. On behalf of the CAS, we engage in the China Manned Space Program (CMSP), acting as the general research center for the Space Utilization System. Over the past 20 or so years or so, CAS has made amazing progress, becoming a major contribution in CMSP. With the efforts of both Chinese and international partners, lots of research projects were carried out by utilizing the SZ series spaceship and the TG-1 space lab in CMSP, and lots of achievements as well as honors were attained. We believe that more remarkable achievements will be attained in China’s Space Station in the near future. Space utilization has been attracting global attention since the beginning of the 21st century. It acts as the embodiment of a country's overall strength in science, technology, and economy. We are proud of our progress in the field. Our vision is to integrate and take advantage of the multi-disciplinary strengths, to realize integral innovation and promote the giant leap in space science and utilization, and to make important innovative contributions. We will commit ourselves to China’s great undertaking of innovation-driven development. It is our mission to run a core research institute of space utilization in CAS. The mission is our driving force and the nation’s expectation is what we live up to. Joining hands with colleagues all over the world, CSU is prepared to become a national top-ranking and international famous institute of space utilization.
