The Opening Ceremony of the 2nd Belt and Road International Training Workshop on Space Science and Utilization Was Held in Hong Kong

The Opening Ceremony of the 2nd Belt and Road International Training Workshop on Space Science and Utilization officially commenced on July 24, 2025, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and will run until August 5. It was hosted by the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as CSU), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation, CAS. Guided by the Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of SciencesChina Manned Space Agency (CMSA), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).


Participants from space agencies, universities, and companies in Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Egypt, Bulgaria, Thailand, Pakistan, and Hong Kong, China have gathered in Hong Kong for a 14-day intensive program aimed at strengthening global cooperation in space science and technology and capacity building.


Dr. Shao-feng Hu, Director the Division of Science Policy and Basic Sciences, Natural Sciences Sector, UNESCO delivered a video message underscoring the importance of inclusive development in space science. Ming Ge, Commissioner for Industry (Innovation &Technology) of the HKSAR Government, outlined Hong Kong's strategic advantages in facilitating global science cooperation. Sherif Sedky, CEO of Egypt Space Agency, shared valuable perspectives on Africa's growing space capabilities and aspirations.


Academic leaders including Prof. Kwang-Ting Tim Cheng, Vice President of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Jie-Bo Luo, Director-General of Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation, CAS expressed their institutions' strong support for the initiative.


Meng-yun Chen from CSU presented the workshop's key objectives, which enhancing participants' understanding of the China Space Station, and the course will delve into cutting-edge topics shaping the future of space exploration and utilization.


The workshop features an intensive schedule of technical lectures, project-based group working, This initiative demonstrates China's commitment to open international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and utilization of outer space, aligning with the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind.
