China Manned Space Program is Moving Towards A New Era of Global Cooperation

The China Space Station is under construction and is scheduled to be completed and put into use around 2022. On the 12th, during the 62nd session of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) jointly announced that the first 9 projects from 17 countries including Switzerland, Poland, Germany and Italy will use the China Space Station conducts space science and utilization research.

This is the first time that China Manned Space Program (CMSP) has carried out large-scale international cooperation through the United Nations. Lin Xiqiang, deputy director and spokesperson of CMSA, said that joining hands with the United Nations to open the door to China Space Station is a major pioneering initiative for China space international cooperation. It is an important sign of a new era for CMSP from independent development to global cooperation.

Space station can conduct hundreds of studies

These 9 projects will focus on human health in long-term space flight, fluid physics and combustion laws under microgravity conditions, cosmic observations, and new materials. The China Space Station will provide free uplink launch and space station operation opportunities, as well as support services such as measurement and control and recycling. R&D funding needs to be borne by the project applicant.

As the "National Space Laboratory", the experiment resources of the China Space Station will be more than 10 times that of the TiangongⅡ, and the conditions are more flexible and diverse. Lv Congmin, deputy chief designer of the space utilization system for CMSP, told reporters that the experiment can be carried out in the cabin of the China Space Station. Among them, 16 scientific experiment racks are set in the Core Module, Experimental Module I and Experimental Module II. Extra-vehicle exposed experiment platform and common-orbit optical module are equipped, supporting hundreds of scientific researches and utilization projects in more than 30 research topics in 11 disciplines including space astronomy, space life science and biotechnology, microgravity basic physics, space materials science, and aerospace medicine.

How will these projects be implemented? The project will be planned according to the development and implementation progress of various projects of the China Space Station. It is understood that at present, the Core Module experiment racks are about to complete the prototype phase development, the experiment racks in Experimental Module I are carrying out the prototype phase development work, the experiment racks in Experimental Module II have completed the key technical research.

42 projects from 27 countries participated in the selection

Space station resources are very valuable. In order to improve the comprehensive utlization efficiency and utilization level of China Space Stations. In March 2016, CMSA and UNOOSA signed the “Memorandum of Understanding on International Cooperation with China Space Station”. On May 28, 2018, the two sides jointly made the official announcement of cooperation opportunities, inviting UN member states to participate in the international cooperation of space science utilizations in the future China Space Station.

After the announcement, 42 projects from 27 countries were received. Applications covering developed and developing countries, the public and private sectors, covering space medicine, aerospace technology, space life sciences and biotechnology, microgravity fluid physics and combustion science, space materials science, space astronomy, earth science, basic physics, and new application technologies, a total of 9 areas.

After receiving the application, CMSA and UNOOSA jointly organized relevant experts to select the project. The selected projects not only have scientific significance, but also can greatly promote the progress of relevant science and technology fields, or can effectively promote the development of space science and technology and scientific research capabilities of the project application countries, and require technical solutions to be reasonable and feasible, and have good technology feasibility, and does not pose a threat to the space station. In the end, 8 projects including space tumors and spectroscopy of nebula gas were successfully selected.

China Space Station "The door is always open"

CMSP is one of the major national science and technology projects. After more than 20 years of implementation, it has sent 11 astronauts to space for 14 times. It has comprehensively broken through and mastered manned space, space departure and rendezvous and docking. The basic aerospace technology has verified key technologies such as cargo transportation and on-orbit propellant addition, astronauts' mid-term presence, and laid a solid foundation for the subsequent construction and operation of manned space stations and exploration of the universe.

CMSP has always adhered to the concept of open and win-win international cooperation. Since the implementation of the project, it has carried out a number of technical cooperation with Russia, Germany, France, Italy and other countries, as well as space agencies and organizations such as ESA and UNOOSA. For example, the world's first high-sensitivity gamma-ray polarization detector jointly developed with ESA member countries was carried into space by Tiangong-II; joint research on weightless cardiovascular function with France on Shenzhou-XI; China-Europe joint maritime astronaut search and rescue training etc.

Lin Xiqiang said that in the future space station mission, CMSP will actively carry out international exchanges and cooperation in various aspects such as equipment development, space utilization, astronaut training, joint flight and space medicine in a more open manner. Countries around the world, especially developing countries, can share the fruits of China manned space development.

"The China Space Station belongs not only to China but also to the whole world." Lin Xiqiang said that the completion of the China Space Station will make more "China’s contribution" to the economic and social development of mankind, provide a better "China’s plan", and welcome more partners to join China. The "friend circle" of manned space cooperation has turned the China Space Station into a common home of all mankind in outer space, making outer space a new frontier for promoting the common welfare of mankind.
