The Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CSU), responsible for the planning and implementation of space science and utilization missions for manned space in China, announced on the 24th that the scientific research facilities of the China Space Station are progressing well.

According to reports, the China Space Station plans to deploy 16 scientific experiment racks in the pressurized module, extra-vehicle exposed experiment platforms and common-orbit optical module to support hundreds of scientific research and application projects in more than 30 research topics in 11 disciplines, including space astronomy, space life science and biotechnology, microgravity basic physics, space materials science and aerospace medicine.

Wang Ke, director of the Integrated Technology Center of CSU, said that 16 scientific experiment racks will be installed in the Core Module, the Experiment Module I and the Experiment Module II respectively. At present, the Core Module scientific experiment racks are about to complete the prototype phase, the Experiment Module I scientific experiment racks are carrying out the prototype phase work, and the Experiment Module II scientific experiment racks have completed key technical research.

In the integrated test hall, these racks look different, about 1.8 meters high, about 1 meter wide and about 0.9 meters deep, each weighing no more than 500 kilograms.

“The scientific experiments supported by these scientific experiment racks are equivalent to 10 Tiangong-II space laboratories. Although the rack of the China Space Station is smaller than the International Space Station and lighter at about 50%, its experiment support capacity and scientific system performance indicators will meet or exceed the similar equipment of the International Space Station. It is believed that with the development of a large number of space utilization projects, more important achievements with international influence and application value will be produced," said Wang Ke.

He introduced that each scientific experiment racks is equivalent to a comprehensive research laboratory that can support space science experiments with single or multidisciplinary intersections. Scientific laboratory equipment can be replaced or upgraded on-orbit by astronauts.

"It's like moving a professional laboratory to the sky and letting the equipment work in a harsh space environment. In order to develop these racks, we have solved a series of problems." Wang Ke said.

For example, he said that the Fluid Physics Experiment Rack integrates 13 advanced diagnostic technologies to achieve simultaneous detection of multiple physical quantities, and at the same time introduces digital holographic diagnostic technology for the first time in the world. The highest temperature of the Container-free Material Experiment Rack can reach 3000 degrees Celsius, which can realize the solidification mechanism of various kinds of samples such as metal and non-metal.

Zhang Wei, director of the Application Development Center of CSU, said that the China Space Station will establish a high-precision time-frequency system and an ultra-low temperature cold atomic experiment system, supporting the development of frontier studies such as general relativity and gravitational physics, novel quantum states, and discovering new laws of physics.

For the first time in the world, China will realize a space clock group consisting of a hydrogen clock, a cold atomic microwave clock, and a light clock. "The error is less than 1 second in 3 billion years, and the accuracy far exceeds the world's first space cold atomic clock of 30 million years of error carried by Tiangong-II Space Laboratory." Zhang Wei said.

China officially sent an invitation to the world last year: welcome countries to use the future China Space Station for cooperation. The China Space Station belongs not only to China but also to the world.

Zhang Wei said that the China Space Station will conduct research on human long-term space survival and improve the quality of life on the ground. It will support the research on the spatial biological effects of microorganisms, plants and animals at different levels such as molecules, cells, tissues, individuals and groups. Provide long-term survival solutions for space; at the same time, carry out research on biotechnology at the forefront of space stem cell proliferation and differentiation, protein crystallization, etc., and provide new means for research and development of new drugs and medical technologies.

He introduced that the Space Station Sky Telescope will conduct observations close to the resolution of the Hubble telescope and its field of view, and study the major scientific issues such as the acceleration mechanism of the universe, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and the origin and evolution of the universe and life, deepen human cognition of the universe. The optical module carrying the telescope is operated independently on the same orbit of the space station and can be docked with the space station for maintenance.

The China Space Station also supports the application of remote technology, on-orbit assembly and maintenance, human-machine joint operations and other application technology test verification to enhance human space activity capabilities and on-orbit service capabilities.

In addition, scientists will carry out scientific research on fluids, combustion and materials under microgravity conditions on the space station, master the essential laws of space material motion, and lay the foundation for human long-term space exploration and space resources development and utilization.
