What Kind of Scientific Research will be Carried Out in Chinese Space Station?

The development of Chinese Space Station (CSS) has entered a key stage, and the core module is expected to launch around 2020. What kind of scientific missions will be carried out during operation phase? The reporter interviewed Gao Ming, member of the national committee of CPPCC, Director General of the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

When CSS construction is completed, it will serve in orbit for more than 10 years. Gao Ming introduced that Chinese Space Station will explore frontier science, human survival and space activities, support large-scale space science experiment, technology and space utilization and other activities.

At present, scientific research facilities and research direction of CSS has been planned, and is under development. In CSS sealed cabin, 13 scientific experiment rack, extravehicular exposure experiment platform and survey telescope flying in the same orbit, will be deployed. These facilities support the implementation of hundreds of scientific research and utilization projects of more than 30 research topics in 9 fields including space astronomy, space life science and biotechnology, microgravity fundamental physics and space materials science.

For frontier scientific exploration, survey telescope onboard CSS will carry out survey in high resolution close to Hubble space telescope, and in a field hundred times of Hubble space telescope, to study important scientific issues such as the cosmic acceleration mechanism, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the origins and evolution of universe and life etc., to deepen our understanding of the universe; high precision time and frequency system and ultra-cold atomic experiment system will be set up in CSS, supporting frontier experiment study of general theory of relativity and gravitational physics, novel quantum state etc., to discover new laws of physics.

At the same time, research and utilization about human survival carried out in CSS will focus on long-term survival in space and improve the quality of life on the ground. Research about microbes, plants, animals in different levels covering molecular, cellular, tissue level will be implemented. These research will exploit methods to fight against undesirable effects, to provide long-term survival solutions; at the same time, the of stem cell proliferation and differentiation, protein crystallization and other cutting-edge biotechnology research will be carried out, to provide new key technologies for novel pharmaceutical research and development.

For the activities in space, CSS supports utilization technologies such as remote science and technology, in-orbit assembly and repair maintenance, man-machine combined operation test, to enhance the ability of human space activities and in-orbit service capability, and expand the scope of human activities. In addition, research about of fluid flow, combustion and materials science research in microgravity conditions will be carried out in CSS. These research will help us master the material movement law in space, and lay the foundation for long-term human space exploration, as well as development and utilization of space resources.

Gao Ming said that the first batch of CSS projects solicitation has been carried out in China, more than 500 project proposals from colleges and universities, research institutes, enterprises and institutions have been collected. After comprehensive evaluation and selection process referred to the International Space Station, first batch of project proposal have been formed. In the first half of this year, the second batch of CSS utilization project proposals will be solicited in China mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions.
